Why it matters
Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper as it heats and cools, and at outlets, switches and splices that movement can loosen the connection over the years. A loose connection means resistance, resistance means heat, and heat at a device is the failure mode behind warm outlets and, occasionally, worse. The wire in the walls is generally fine — it's the connections that need the right treatment. That's the whole story with aluminum branch wiring.
How to tell if you have it
- Check the era. Homes wired roughly 1965–1979 are the main candidates. Most Gilbert tract homes are newer copper; older Mesa and Apache Junction homes are likelier.
- Look at exposed cable. In the attic, garage or panel, cable jackets are sometimes printed with "AL" or "ALUMINUM." Copper shows "CU."
- Peek at a receptacle wire. With power off, the conductor color at a device can hint — aluminum is silvery rather than copper-colored. When unsure, don't guess; have it confirmed.
The fix isn't always a rewire
This is where honest advice matters. A full rewire is one option, but often not the necessary one. Approved corrective connectors and proper terminations at each device address the specific failure point — the connection — at a fraction of the cost of tearing into every wall.
