Two separate costs: the charger and the install
People often quote a single "EV charger price," but there are two numbers. The charger hardware is a retail purchase you control. The installation — the dedicated 240-volt circuit and the labor to run it — is where the variation lives, and national cost guides reflect that with a wide published range for the electrical work. What follows is what actually decides your install cost.
What moves the installation price
Distance from the panel. A charger mounted on the garage wall next to the panel needs a short circuit run; one across the garage, through an attic, or out to a detached garage needs much more wire and labor. This is usually the single biggest factor.
Amperage. A 48-amp charger needs heavier wire and a bigger breaker than a 32-amp one, so faster charging costs a bit more to wire. We size the circuit to your car's actual charge rate so you don't pay for amps it can't use.
Hardwired vs. plug-in. A plug-in NEMA 14-50 outlet and a hardwired connection differ in materials and labor; higher-amperage units are often hardwired.
Panel capacity. The wild card. If your panel has room, the install is straightforward. If it's near its limit — common in older Gilbert homes — you may need a panel upgrade first, which is a separate, larger cost we'll flag before you commit.
Ways to keep it reasonable
