Why the lights keep tripping
Two culprits cause almost every holiday-lighting trip. The first is overload: stringing too many light sets end-to-end, or plugging the whole display into one outlet, draws more than that circuit can carry, and the breaker opens to protect the wire. The second is a GFCI trip: outdoor outlets are GFCI-protected, and moisture from morning dew, sprinklers or a rare rain can cause a genuine trip — the device protecting you, not malfunctioning.
How to plan around it
- Switch to LED light strings. LEDs draw a small fraction of what old incandescent strings pull, so you can run far more on one circuit without tripping.
- Spread the load. Plug different sections into outlets on different circuits rather than daisy-chaining everything into one.
- Respect the string limit. Manufacturers list how many sets you can connect end-to-end — exceeding it overloads the first plug.
- Keep connections dry. Use outdoor-rated cords, keep plug connections off the ground, and use in-use covers on outdoor outlets to reduce GFCI moisture trips.
When to add an outlet
If you're running cords out a window or across the yard every year, that's the sign to add a proper exterior outlet. A dedicated, GFCI-protected outdoor outlet — or a few placed where the display goes — removes the cord clutter and the overload.
