What homeowners notice first

The panel repair calls we get usually start with something small and specific: "the cover feels warm," "there's a faint hot-plastic smell near the garage," "one breaker won't reset no matter what," or "the lights on one side of the house dim when the dryer runs." None of those is a diagnosis on its own — but each points at the panel rather than the circuit downstream, and each is worth taking seriously before it becomes the reason for a whole new service.

Why a panel develops a fault

Inside the box, every wire lands under a screw or a spring clip, and every one of those connections lives through Arizona's daily heat swing. Metal expands when it's carrying load on a 112°F afternoon and contracts overnight, and over a couple of decades that cycling works a connection loose. A loose lug has more resistance, more resistance makes heat, and heat is what discolors the breaker and softens the insulation — the classic warm-panel complaint. Aluminum feeder conductors, common in homes built through the 1990s and 2000s here, are especially prone to it. Separately, a breaker is a mechanical device with a spring and contacts; after thousands of trips or one hard fault, it can weld, wear, or simply stop tripping at its rating. Those are the two repairs we make most: re-terminating a hot connection, and swapping a breaker that's done.

When a repair isn't the right answer

Sometimes honesty means telling you a repair is a bad investment. If your panel is a Federal Pacific or Zinsco — brands with a documented record of breakers that fail to trip — patching one breaker leaves the real hazard in place, and a panel replacement is the sound call. If the service is simply too small for what you're adding, no repair adds capacity, and an electrical panel upgrade is what you actually need. And if the breaker keeps tripping because a downstream circuit is overloaded or shorted, the fix is out on the circuit, not in the panel — that's ordinary circuit breaker and electrical repair work. We'll tell you which of these you're looking at before quoting anything.

Our panel repair process

1. Thermal and visual inspection

   We open the panel, check for heat, discoloration and looseness, and identify the exact connection or breaker at fault.

2. Confirm repairable vs. replace

   If it's one component in an otherwise sound, supported panel, we repair. If the box itself is the problem, we tell you plainly.

3. Repair to spec

   We re-terminate to the correct torque, replace breakers matched to the panel's listing, and correct any double-taps.

4. Load test and verify

   We put the circuit back under load and confirm the connection runs cool and the breaker holds.

What you can check before we arrive

• Note which breaker or circuit is involved and what's on it (dryer, oven, AC, garage).
• Feel the panel cover for warmth and listen for buzzing — from arm's length, without opening it.
• Check the panel label for the brand and main rating so we can bring matching breakers.
• If you smell burning or see scorching, don't reset anything — shut the main and call.
