How switch trouble shows up

Switches fail in small, telling ways: a light that flickers when you touch the switch, a switch that buzzes or feels warm, one you have to wiggle to make the light come on, or a three-way setup where the upstairs switch works but the downstairs one no longer does. Because a switch is used dozens of times a day, it's also one of the first devices to wear out — but a warm switch is the one to act on, not live with.

Why switches fail

A standard switch is a mechanical contact that opens and closes a circuit, and after tens of thousands of flips those internal contacts wear, pit, and stop making a clean connection — which is what causes intermittent operation and the need to jiggle. Loose wire terminations behind the switch, including the backstab connections common in tract homes here, add resistance and heat, and that's the warm-switch complaint. A buzzing switch is often a dimmer mismatched to LED bulbs or a switch carrying more load than it's rated for. Three-way problems (two switches controlling one light) usually come down to a failed switch or a miswired traveler after someone replaced a device. When it isn't the switch

Not every "switch problem" is the switch. If the light flickers no matter which switch or fixture, the issue may be the bulb or the fixture. If a whole room's lights and switches are dead, that points upstream to the circuit — that's electrical repair. 2. Open and inspect

3. Repair or replace

   We re-terminate loose wires, replace worn switches, or correct three-way traveler wiring.

4. Test

   We verify smooth operation and, for three-ways, control from both locations.

What to check first

• Note whether the light or the switch is the problem by trying the bulb elsewhere.
• Feel the switch for warmth — if warm, leave it off and call.
• For a buzzing dimmer, check whether the bulbs are LED and the dimmer is LED-rated.
• For a three-way, confirm whether one or both switches fail to control the light.
