How it usually starts
A fixture flickers no matter which bulb you put in. A ceiling light hums faintly. The dining-room chandelier has one section that's gone dark. A light works sometimes and not others. Why fixtures develop faults
Inside a fixture, the socket and its wiring take heat every time the light runs, and over years that heat can corrode the socket contacts, loosen the internal connections, or dry out and crack older wire insulation — any of which causes flicker, intermittent operation, or a dead fixture. Buzzing is often an incompatible bulb-and-dimmer pairing or a loose lamination in an older fixture. A dead fixture can also be a fault upstream: a failing switch, a loose connection in the ceiling box, or a circuit issue.
